Does your large dog turn every walk into a battle with the leash? If you come home with sore arms and the feeling that your dog is the one walking you, you’re definitely not alone. Big, strong dogs often pull simply because they’re excited and have never been taught another way.
The good news, you don’t need harsh tools or rough handling. With a few simple rules and the right gear, walks can become calm and enjoyable again.
1. Teach “stop and go”
When the leash gets tight, you stop.
When your dog looks back at you or the leash softens, you calmly move forward again.
After enough repetitions your dog learns a clear rule: pulling doesn’t take us anywhere, walking nicely does.
2. Reward calm walking
Don’t only react when your dog is doing something wrong. Notice the good moments.
Every time your dog walks by your side with a loose leash, mark it with a “yes” or “good” and give a small treat or praise. Dogs repeat what is rewarded — so pay attention to the behavior you actually want.
3. Make the walk predictable
Dogs feel safer and calmer when they understand the rules.
Start the walk the same way each time: ask for a short sit, clip the leash on, and only then open the door. Keep the leash at a similar length and be consistent about when your dog is allowed to sniff or cross the street.
When the walk has a clear structure, your dog relaxes faster and it’s easier for them to follow you instead of charging ahead.
4. Reduce extra energy
A dog that has done nothing all day will explode with excitement outside.
Short play, a few training exercises or simple sniffing games at home before the walk can take the edge off. A dog that has already used some mental and physical energy is more focused and less likely to drag you down the street.
5. Use a Head Collar for Large Dogs
For many owners of strong dogs, training alone still feels like a fight. A no-pull head halter gives you gentle, precise control over the dog’s head — and where the head goes, the body follows. Instead of tightening around the neck, it lets you calmly guide your dog back to you when they start to pull or lunge.
Our head halter is designed especially with powerful breeds in mind:
➖Anatomical shape that follows the natural lines of the dog’s head, so the straps sit correctly and don’t rub the eyes or interfere with breathing.
➖Adjustable buckles to create a custom fit for different head shapes and sizes — from Dobermans and Malinois to German Shepherds and other strong breeds.
➖Soft padded lining on the nose area for everyday comfort, even on long walks.
